Dr. Zhang’s research interests span to the different aspects of wireless sensor networks, including protocol engineering, performance analysis and optimization, etc. He is especially interested in the computational sensing methods that deal with transmission and processing of gigantic sensory data, which employs statistical signal processing, machine learning, and information theory.
His research has been widely supported by NSFC, MOST and industry.
1. Tsinghua-CISCO Joint Research Program, “MASON: Metropolitan Area Sensing and Operating Networks”, Jan. 2009-Dec. 2011, Principle Investigator
The objective of the project is to build a mobile based city wide sensor network that will provide low-cost coverage with enormously large number of sensors. Information dissemination, data field reconstruction, and information security are major issues of consideration. The applications of MASON include public security surveillance, pollutant monitoring.
2. Hi-tech Research and Development Program of China (National 863 Project), “Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks for Precision Agriculture Applications,” Jan. 2007-Dec. 2011, Principle Investigator.
The objective of the project is to identify and resolve the problems in the mobile sensing and climate control for the precision agriculture, and the deliverables include a real implementation of such a network.
3. National Science Funding, China, “Wireless Sensor Networks Supporting Contect-rich Applications”, Jan. 2007-Dec. 2009, Principle Investigator.
We exploit the scientific issues in future sensor networks that support content-rich applications. Models for collaborative communication and localization protocols were developed.
4. China Railway Research Institute, “Wireless Sensor Network for Beijing 2008 Olympic Game Main Stadium”, March 2006 – September 2009, Principle Investigator.
The project deployed a wireless sensor network on the roof of the stadium that collected the temperature and tension data in real time during the construction procedure. The key problems resolved were power efficiency and disruption tolerance of the network protocols.
