Educational Idea

To cultivate high-quality talents with solid basic theories, broad knowledge level and profound humanistic connotations; to make students master system knowledge of disciplines such as optics, machinery, electricity, measurement and control and to make students equipped with abilities of research and development, project management and international market exploration; to provide graduates with global vision and comprehensive competitiveness.

 

Cultivation Objective

To focus on the discipline frontier based on the engineering practice, and to cultivate “research-based, management-type, innovation-type and international-oriented” leading talents in fields of instrument science and technology as well as optical engineering, be committed to the forward-looking scientific researches of deep inter-disciplines and contribute to national economy and defense.

Overview of Teaching

Currently, there are 284 undergraduates, 152 postgraduates and 219 doctoral students in the Department of Precision Instrument. Besides, over 40 undergraduate courses and 25 postgraduate courses are offered.

The professional cultivation of Department of Precision Instrument has been made as the characteristic specialty of colleges and universities: Measurement and Control Technology and Instrument. Having passed the engineering education accreditation in 2013, Department of Precision Instrument uses the classification cultivating mode with credit system management and flexible study duration to award Bachelor of engineering degree to the students who complete their studies and conform to the requirements of cultivating program. Excellent graduates are given priorities to directly continue for master's degree and doctor's degree. “Meticulous cultivation on talents” plan has been implemented as from 2013 to allocate a supervisor for each freshman. Academicians, Chang Jiang scholars and famous professors are responsible for the teaching of undergraduate students and professors from prestigious famous universities would also be invited to teach short-term courses. There are 2 national superior courses, 3 Beijing superior courses and 6 superior courses of Tsinghua University among courses being offered. Of which, 3 courses are building themselves into massive open online courses of Tsinghua University. In recent years, teachers of the Department of Precise Instrument have published over 30 undergraduate teaching materials. Fundamentals of Control Engineering (Third Edition), Exercise Explanation of Basis of Control Engineering (Third Edition) and Experimental Guidance of Fundamentals of Control Engineering have been included in the list of teaching materials for secondary selection of the National Planning Materials for Undergraduates of Regular Higher Education Universities under “12th Five-Year Plan” by Ministry of Education. In 2012, the Department of Precise Instrument won the Second Prize of Beijing Teaching Result. It has created conditions for excellent students to stand out by various ways such as “Project on Cultivating Outstanding and Innovative Students” and technological competitions.

There are 32 doctoral supervisors and 61 master supervisors in Department of Precision Instrument. Postgraduates and doctoral students are recruited and cultivated on the basis of two first-level disciplines, Instrument Science and Technology and Optical Engineering. As for the range of recruit, it includes postgraduates in fields of instrument and meter engineering, optical engineering and project management and engineering doctoral students. There are 6 departmental summer practice bases for doctoral students, which have been jointly established by Department of Precision Instrument and Laser Fusion Research Center of China Academy of Engineering Physics. During the process of post graduates cultivation, the Department encourages the postgraduates to participate in various international communications and sends a number of students to national high-level co-cultivation projects.

Teaching Result Prize: 2012: “Fulfill the Creed of Educating Students through Practice and Insight on Unity of Knowledge and Action----- Major of New Experimental Teaching Curriculum System of Measurement and Control Technology and Instrument” won the second prize of Beijing Teaching Result and the first prize of Tsinghua University Teaching Result.

International Communication:

Department of Precision Instrument provides undergraduates and postgraduates with numerous international communication opportunities. Undergraduates:

From 2010 to 2014, 30 undergraduates have taken part in the international communication project of French Engineers and student exchange programs in universities such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California Berkeley, University of Tokyo, University of Minnesota, University of Toronto, Purdue University, Helsinki University of Technology, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and University of Hong Kong, respectively. More than 20 undergraduates have participated in short-term overseas internship. We have recruited over 20 overseas students from North Korea, South Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam from 2010 to 2014.

Post Graduates:

From 2010 to 2014, over 20 postgraduates have visited the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, German, Switzerland and Australia for co-cultivation, more than 50 post graduates have attended international academic conference and over 40 post graduates have been to foreign universities for short-term communications or visits.
