Research Interest:
Research and practice of developments of portrait photography under the influence of globalization of contemporary art.
 
 
Academic Propositions:
Deng focuses on studying the evolution and development of photography thought and its impact on contemporary portrait photography. He has been engaged in portrait photography creation and practice by integrating traditional Chinese artistic style and western modern photography concepts and conducted analysis on domestic and overseas classical visual texts and applied findings into teaching. Deng attaches great importance to the education system of photography aesthetics and combines art with science in fostering professional photography talents.    
 
Academic Achievements:
During over 30 years of photography creation and teaching, Deng has been concerned about both the development of photography in China and the comparative study of contemporary photography in the western world.  In 1980s, he completed China's first celebrity portrait photography collection, "Chinese Intellectuals’ Photography Collection," which filled the blank in the discipline of celebrity portrait photography in China, explored the establishment and development of the discipline of celebrity portrait photography in China and was crowned as "A Cultural Project for China" at home and abroad. From 1990s to the beginning of 21st century, Deng has been engaging in the theoretical research and creation practice of portrait photography and accomplished the plan of shooting world celebrities and created hundreds of pieces of the world's elite portraits and notes of more than one million words, known as "a pioneering work in human history of photography." He also gives lectures in universities at home and abroad, disseminating and advocating the "cultural photography" idea. His works have been selected into dozens of photographic textbooks.
1. Artistic creations and major solo exhibitions:
2010, "Chinese", World Expo 2010, Shanghai
Deng Wei Photo Show "Chinese”, which was under the leadership of the Propaganda Department of CPC Central Committee and the Central Spiritual Civilization Office and sponsored by China Federation of Literature, was exhibited at Expo 2010, Shanghai. The album with the same name was also published.
 
2009, "Peking People", Capital Museum
Deng Wei Photo Show "Memory of the City - Peking People", which was a major key project at 60th anniversary of PRC, was exhibited during the National Holiday. The album with the same name was also published.
 
2008, “Aegean Sun", Capital Museum
Deng Wei Photo Show "Aegean Sun” with the Olympic theme, which was jointly organized by the Olympic Organizing Committee and the Greek Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Tourism, was exhibited in Capital Museum during Beijing Olympic Games. The album with the same name was also published.
 
2007, "Collection of Deng Wei's Donations to National Art Museum of China", National Art Museum of China
20th Century Collection and Award Program of National Art Museum of China a is national cultural program aimed at collecting works of artists in the 20th century who had achieved outstanding achievements in art activities and creations. This collection is the first time for National Art Museum of China to collect 100 works of a photographer, and the first time in China's art history and the history of the National Art Museum of China, fully illustrating the value and status of these photographs.

4. Research cooperation with professional brands in the field of image
U.S. Kodak's testing for color negative film of high sensitivity. Japanese Epson's performance research on professional imaging output device. Japanese Nikon's evaluation on imaging of professional camera lens. Performance analysis of German Leica's S2 professional digital camera and comparison in the quality of imaging with traditional film: comparison in its pixels with traditional particles; color reproduction performance testing of sensitive components, imaging contrast of imagery, contrast of dark and high light imaging.

2009, Greek "Sophie Prize"
"Sophie" means wisdom in ancient Greek, so this award is to recognize those outstanding people who use the wisdom of different civilizations to make contributions to human well-being with their own unique professional skills, among whom the German writer Goethe was awarded this honorary title in 1793. This Award Judging Panel consists of professors and experts from University of Athens, Academy of Athens, the European Union Wise Men Federation and the University of Cambridge. The Judging Panel's awarding speech for Professor Deng Wei is: "The Judging Panel unanimously agreed to award 'Sophie' Prize to Professor Deng Wei, to recognize his contributions to enable mankind toward a more humanistic values, concepts and principles - the spirit of Greece with his outstanding talent, ideas and actions."
In 2009, Professor Deng Wei was awarded "Sophie" prize in the famous cultural sites in Greece Delphi. He was the first Chinese to receive this award. Together with him, Zhores Alfyorov, the Russian physicist, Nobel Prize winner in Physics in 2000, was also awarded this prize.
 
In 2007, Deng Wei received the highest honor of the British photographer, "Hon.FRPS".
The Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain is one of the world's oldest photography organizations, and the most influential photographic organizations in the world. "Hon.FRPS" is aimed to recognize photographers who have made outstanding achievements in photography science or photography art. The Judging Panel's awarding speech for Professor Deng Wei is: "Deng Wei is not only a world-class portrait photographer, but also author of a dozen of monographs and a master having an endless passion for photography. We are very pleased that the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain will award the highest honor to this outstanding photographer."
 
In 2006, at the commemoration of 50th anniversary of Chinese Photographers Association, he was awarded the title of "Photographer with Outstanding Contributions".
In 2004, his photographic work "Portraits of the World Celebrities" won him the top prize in Chinese photography world, "Academy Award".
In 1987, he was awarded the Hong Kong Film Award.
In 1986, the film "Sacrificed Youth" won the by the Jury Special Prize of French Scitech International Film Festival.
 
He was listed in the Cambridge edition of "World Who's Who", the U.S. edition of "Almanac of World Celebrities' Biography Centre", the Singapore edition of "Who's Who in Asia", Chinese Commercial Press's edition of "Encyclopedic Dictionary of Chinese Art", "Twentieth Century Chinese Art Photo Blog", "Handed Down Classics of Chinese Photography", the British edition of "150 years of the British Royal Photographic Society " and so on.
 
Academic Teaching: Courses Undertaken
1. Visual Language (3)
With preliminary study and practice of basic theories in photography, students will be able to master the basics and technologies of photography and methods of artistic expression, so as to preliminarily master the photographic styling and lay the basis for styling of optical imaging. Teaching highlights: the expression methods of the five elements of photographic styling, namely shape, color, sound quality, and motion, which involves the integrated use of lens imaging, photosensitive material, exposure control and post-film transfer, color adjustment, and many other methods.
2. Portrait photography
Starting from the history of the ancient Chinese art and portrait painting in the history of Western art, the course will present the origin and context of portrait art, and the seeds of modern portrait photography, providing theoretical basis for the study of portrait photography. It also introduces the photographic technologies and material revolution brought by new technologies and their impact on contemporary photography. With the addition of analysis of the classics and shooting practice, students will be able to master the overall approach and creative ability of portrait photography.
3. Lens Language
It is a systematic presentation of expression methods of professional image styling, which will enable students to master and employ the lens language to convey information, feelings, and self-conceptions in photography, such as the choice for the category of the scene, the position of the character in the picture, the design of character's pose, and the composition of the picture, and the choice of focal length of the lens. It is aimed to study the styling function and design conception of the lens language.
