International Students Courses

This admission information is only applicable for foreigners who wish to study undergraduate courses or attend advanced studies in our academy. Students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, please contact the Educational Administration Department. For international students applying for a master or doctor’s degree, please contact the International Students’ Office of Tsinghua University.

Academy Background
Preceded by the Central Academy of Arts & Design established in 1956, the Academy of Arts & Design ,Tsinghua University boasts a complete range of disciplines, rich resources, and a world renown facility of professors. Tsinghua enjoys a high reputation both at home and abroad. The Academy of Arts & Design has ten departments with 25 undergraduate majors, and two Graduate study concentrations for master’s and doctoral degrees —Theory of Arts and Design and Theory of Arts for. The Theory of Arts and Design was nationally recognized as a key discipline in 2002.
On November 1st, 2005, the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University moved its campus from ChaoYang District to a new teaching facility on the Tsinghua main campus. This new teaching environment, is full of rich teaching resources, together with the wide range of subjects offered, the Academy is sure to undergo further development.
Following Tsinghua University’s strategic guideline for building a world-class university, the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University receives the school motto of “constantly striving to become stronger and profoundly virtuous to overcome all challenges”, and strives to build itself into an outstanding world-class academy of fine arts .
1. Recruitment Category and Qualification
Undergraduate students: must be a high school graduate with a diploma, and have HSK-6 certificate;
Advanced Study: must be of sophomore or higher educational status, and have HSK-4 certificate;
Senior Advanced Study: must have a master’s degree or equivalent, or be qualified to study Doctoral courses, and have an HSK-4 certificate.

2. Application Period
Application period for the undergraduate program is from April 1st to April 20th. Late applications will not be processed. Applications maybe mailed or delivered directly to the Academy.

3. Examination Date and Contents
Examination date: temporarily scheduled in mid-May each year
Examination contents: (1) examinees applying for Arts & Design and Plastic Arts, should participate in the Drawing and Color examinations;
(2) Examinees applying for Theory of Arts and Design, should participate in the Chinese Proficiency Test held by our Academy instead of Drawing and Color.

4. Application Materials & Procedures
①Materials required to apply:
Undergraduate students: high school or college diploma and transcript (photocopy is accepted), HSK-6 certificate (students who participated in the HSK exam in April, a photocopy of the HSK exam attendance certificate is required), and a personal resume.
Advanced study: certificate or transcript showing sophomores or higher educational status (photocopy is accepted), HSK-4 certificate (for the students who participated in the HSK exam in April, a photocopy of HSK exam attendance certificate is required), six professional design works (actual pieces or CD either are acceptable), personal resume.
Senior Advanced study: master degree certificate (photocopy is accepted), HSK-4 certificate (for the students who participated in the HSK exam in April, a photocopy of the HSK exam attendance certificate is required), six professional design works, and personal resume.

Accepted Students: The applicants whose application materials pass our Academy’s
verification will be enrolled.

Note: 1. Students who participated in the HSK exam in April, the submission date of HSK certificate can be postponed to the end of May. The students who fail to submit a certificate within the allotted period will be disqualified and not accepted.
2. Application fee and materials will not be returned.

②Application Procedures:
1. Obtain an Application Form for International Students of the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University from our Academy’s Service Department of International Students or from our website;
2. Please mail the completed form, application materials and application fee to our Academy’s Service Department of International Students (refer to article 11 of this admission information for mailing address and postal code), or submit directly to the Service Department of International Students.

5. Majors
Note: the Academy has adopted a credit system, accepts applications and enrolls examinees based on major. After entering the Academy, first year students study fundamental core courses, second year students select direction of specialty in accordance with the students’ requirements of social development, the academy’s discipline planning, and the students personal interests and ambitious. After selecting a major of concentration, generally students are not allowed to transfer to other departments. If a transfer is required, students should apply in writing to the Service Department of International Students in March, and consult the Service Department of International Students for more information.

6. Educational System

All undergraduate programs require 4 years of study;
Training period for Advanced Study at our Academy shall not be less than 1 semester.

7. Tuition & Fees

Note: Undergraduate students who withdraw during the fall semester, Academy will be refunded the spring semester tuition; Students who withdraw during sping semester will not be refunded;
Students of Advanced Study who paid a full years’ tuition, withdrawal ahead of application deadline for the following semester, will be refunded the full tuition amount; Students who withdrawal, from the application deadline to the beginning of school and registration period, will refund 80% of the tuition for that semester;
Generally, tuition of students who withdraw halfway will not be refunded. For the students who withdraw halfway due to special reasons, if they apply for withdrawal within the first month of courses, the Academy will refund 50% of the paid tuition of that current semester; Students who apply for withdrawal one month after courses have begin, will not be refunded .

8. Admission Procedures
1. Students who pass the application verification or professional exams, will be issued an Admission Letter of the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University and JW202 form, i.e. Visa Application for Study in China;
2. The students should take the Admission Letter, JW202 form, Physical Examination Record for Foreigners, and Blood Laboratory Report to the embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the host country, and apply for a student entry visa; or enter China as a tourist, and bring the documents above with tuition to the Academy. The Service Department of International Students will assist in the handling of the student visa;
The students under 18 years old need to provide guarantee letter of their legal guardian in China and undergo notary public office’s notarization;
3. After entering China, the students should handle Accommodation Registration at the local police station in charge of their temporary residence within 24 hours (excluding the students who live at Zijing Apartment in Tsinghua campus), with passport and a photocopy of passport, Admission Letter, and student visa to our Academy. The Service Department of International Students will assist in handling a Residence Permit.
Note: The above materials must be kept properly. In case of loss, students should report in written form to the Service Department of International Students immediately.

9. Accommodation
Zijing Apartments on the Tsinghua campus has many accommodation standards available for students to choose from.

10. Payment Methods
1. Remittance
Application fee should be paid in cash along with the application materials. Tuition accounting accepts tuition only, and will not accept application fees.
For international currency, accounting will convert the payment into RMB in accordance to the exchange rate on arrival date, we recommend that students convert their tuition into RMB before submitting. After sending payment, please fax a photocopy of the telegraph money order and students’ name to: 86- 10- 6506 7964.

2. Paying Tuition at the Academy
The students may take cash (RMB) to the Service Department of International Students, B335 Administration Office, Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University to pay tuition personally.

3. Payment Period
Application fee should be paid in cash along with the submission of the application materials from April 1st -20th;
The tuition should be paid before the semester begins. The students should take the invoice issued by the Financial Department to the Service Department of International Students, which shall assist them in handling a visa and residence permit. If the student fails to pay tuition in full within 15 days after the semester begins, the students shall be considered to have withdrawn from school and will be automatically dismissed.
