Educational Resources
To better support the fostering of qualified faculty and staff, Tsinghua
University is establishing an intelligent multimedia educational network
of information, in which all resources are widely shared. This network
will improve the educational environment and expand the services of
the electronic library.
Library
The Tsinghua University Library has a floor space of 39000 square meters
and provides more than 2500 seats for patrons. The library holds a
rich collection of books and journals amounting to 3,923,000 volumes,
which cover a broad range of subjects including the humanities, social
sciences and management, but mainly focuses on natural science, and
engineering and technology. The library has a comprehensive operating
system with a variety of sources: students may find information through
the online database and the network resources.
In the 1990's, the Library made substantial progress
in automation and networking. An advanced and fairly
complete information infrastructure has been formed.
The CD ROM network also has been created to provide
students and faculty with the literature and information
searching services via the campus network. In recent
years, an increasing number of electronic resources
and virtual resources have been made available in
the Library or online. These form an information
system that is open, multi-level, efficient and service-oriented.
The system supports the University's goal of becoming
a world-class university.
Digital Campus
Digital Library
Tsinghua University's virtual library is a network of information databases
on internet sources related to the University, including material on
organizations, institutions, electronic journals, well-known scholars,
computer software, and academic information in university-related fields.
Information
Network Engineering Research Center
The Tsinghua University Information Network Engineering Research Center
was set up in June 1994 as an engineering research entity with the cross-discipline
background of Computer Science and Communication. Since its establishment,
the center has completed "Sample Project of CERNET (China Education & Research
Net)" which was undertaken jointly by Tsinghua and nine other well-known
Chinese universities. The first CERNET in China to adopt the TCP/IP system
structure as also established here. The center serve as an important
base for the state computer and internet technology research.
Computer
and Information Management Center
The Tsinghua University Computer and Information Management Center was
set up in 1975. The main tasks of the center are to conduct research
on the basic network service for building the digital campus and to provide
necessary technological support and service. The center is also responsible
for the programming, planning, and use of the information system of Tsinghua
University as well as the campus education systems such as online education
and distance education. Simultaneously, the center offers the courses
in basic computer science and computer operation. The design and development
of CAI is also part of the center's responsibility.
In recent years, using the latest computer technology,
the center produced the Tsinghua University Comprehensive
Information System, the Office Automation System,
the Comprehensive Teaching Administration System,
the Financial and Wage Management System and the
Open- laboratory Comprehensive Management System.
Electronic Teaching Center
Launched in early 1978, the Electronic Teaching Center provides support
for Tsinghua academic activities. The main task of the center is to build
a modern teaching environment, and manage and develop the related technology
research. The center is in charge of the Tsinghua Distance Education
Channel. Tsinghua Cable Television Net, the Modern Education Technology
Research Institute, the Audio-video Teaching Material Production and
Press, the Faculty Rest Net Site, and Tsthghua Hua Sheng Audio and Video
Technology Developing Company.
Tsinghua Online Classroom
In September 2000, Tsinghua Online Classroom was established. And it
is now the teaching and administration platform of distance education,
taking full advantage of the network to develop the online educational
programs. It offers series of courses in different majors for master's
degrees, and for bachelor's degrees for those students who are junior
college graduates. To date, more than 50 online courses have been developed.
The students in the distance education program can register, select courses,
ask questions, download course materials and hand in homework through
the Classroom. Currently there are more than 10,000 students registered.
Continuing Education
The School of Continuing Education was established in 1985. It is responsible
for continuing education, distance education, and adult education. In
1999, the Ministry of Education approved Tsinghua University out of a
group of three universities as the pilot school for modern distance education.
Division under the school are of distance education,
vocational education and training, international
cooperation for training, adult education, and business
development, etc.
Through combining the Internet, satellite digital
net and CATV, the division of distance education
has established 114 off-campus teaching centers in
31 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions
in the country. Totally 7573 students registered
in the division for graduate learning.
At the division of Vocational Education and Training,
courses are offered in fields such as administration,
finance, engineering technology, language and culture,
etc.
The division of International Cooperation for Training
is mainly involved in educational cooperation with
foreign universities areas of business and trade,
management, law, language and culture, art and engineering
technology. At present, the division has established
cooperative relationships with other countries like
USA, UK, France, Sweden and Australia. The programs
include undergraduate and graduate education and
training.
