| Tsinghua
University has nurtured and attracted large numbers
of outstanding experts and scholars. In recent
years, the Univesrity has followed the policy
of ¡°enlisting as well as cultivating talented
people¡± and has broadened the capabilities of
the young teachers. In order to have a high-level
teaching staff, Tsinghua has brought in distinguished
professionals through the country and the world.
At present Tsinghua has 2877 teachers among
which 1069 are professors, 1087 are associate
professors and nearly 700 are doctoral advisers.
There are 1849 teachers under the age of
45, accounting for sixty-three percent of
the total. Nearly sixty-two percent of these
young teachers hold Ph.D. degrees. Tsinghua
has 34 members of the Chinese Academy of
Sciences and 28 members of the Chinese Academy
of Engineering. Tsinghua currently has the
highest number of academicians of any college
and university in China.
To accelerate the development of the young
teachers, measures have been taken by the
University to upgrade the faculty structure
and to improve the teaching quality. These
measures include the establishment of the ¡°Award
for New Academics, ¡± the ¡°Award for Teaching
Excellence by Young Teachers,¡± the ¡°100
Leading Faculty Recruitment Program,¡± and
the ¡°Key Members of Support Program¡±.
Over the past few years, 47 young teachers
have been selected by the Ministry of Education
(MOE) as specially appointed professors and
lecturers for the ¡°Changjiang Scholar Award
Plan.¡± Seventy-three young teachers have
received funding awards in recognition of
their achievements, 42 have received the ¡°New-century
Outstanding Scholars Fund¡± awards, and 18
have been granted MOE awards for excellence.
Chair Professors
In 2003, there are totally nine group of professors from world-famous
universities joined Tsinghua University as Chair professors. The
details are as follows:

professor group headed by Professor Yao Qizhi of Princeton University;

- Zhou Peiyuan Institute of Applied Mathematics appointed Chair
professor group headed by Professor Feng Yuanzhen of University
of California, San Diego
- Department of Physics appointed Chair professor group headed
by Professor Tan Zizhong of University of Washington
- Department of Mathematical Science appointed Chair professor
group headed by Professor Jean-Marc Fontaine Of Universite Paris
- Department of Landscape Architecture appointed USA Architect
Laurie D.Olin as Chair professor(also as first department director);
- Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology appointed Professor
Gerhard Schweitzer of The Federal Institute of Technology ( ETH,
Swiss), professor G.H. Lohnert Chairman of German Nuclear Association,
Doctor Jason of USA Electricity Research Institute, as Chair professors
- Department of Physics appointed Professor Pan Jianwei of University
of Vienna as Chair professor

100 Leading Faculty Recruitment Program
In August 1998, The University launched
the ¡°100 Leading Faculty Recruitment Program¡±,
aiming at 100 outstanding people in academic
fields and guide them to become leading figures
in their own disciplines at The University.
To date, 86 faculties have been selected.

Senior Visiting Scholar Program
A senior visiting scholar system was established in August 1998,
and a special fund for these top academics was also set up to attract
distinguished people in various fields to come to Tsinghua. There
are presently 158 people participating in the program.
Awards for New Academics and Awards for Teaching Excellence by
Young Teachers
In 1995, the ¡°Award for New Academics in Tsinghua University¡± was
set up to subsidize those exceptional young professors who have
made remarkable achievements in teaching and research. By now,
there are 72 young professors enjoyed the award. In 1996, the ¡°Award
for Teaching Excellence by Young Teachers in Tsinghua University¡± was
set up to aid young teachers. So far, 80 awards have been granted.
