Ancestral home, Tianjin. Starting in 1909, he studied in America, receiving the Bachelor's degree from Washington University in 1914. He returned to China and taught at Tsinghua, beginning in 1914. Then he was appointed Dean, and later, temporary President.
He was President of National Tsinghua University from October 1931 to December 1948. Under his leadership, Tsinghua became famous. During the long war between China and Japan, he remained the president of Tsinghua for eight years, and presided over National Changsha Temporary University. After the war, when Tsinghua moved back to Beijing, he continued be the President. While President, he brought about great development at Tsinghua and had founded five Schools with a total of 26 departments by December 1948.
Mei Yiqi went to Taiwan in 1955, and promoted the "Tsinghua Atomic Science Academy" in Taiwan with Tsinghua funds, which eventually became Xinzhu Tsinghua University. He died in Taipei on 19 May 1962.
