To the southeast of the large grassy quadrangle in front of the auditorium, is Tsinghua Xuetang, a distinctive L-shaped, two-story building of German Classical design with blue bricks, red tiles, and a steep roof.
Tsinghua Xuetang was built in two stages. The western part was constructed from 1909 to 1911 and used for classrooms; the eastern portion was completed in 1916, and for many years was used as a student dormitory. The four Chinese characters -- "Tsing Hua Xue Tang" -- painted on the main entrance, were copied from an inscription by Na Tong, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Department at the time.
