Statue of Wen Yiduo

  At the foot of the Wen Pavilion is a red marble statue of Wen Yiduo that was erected in 1986.

  Wen Yiduo, who changed his name from JiaYe, was born in Xishu, Hubei Province in 1899. In the autumn of 1912, he was admitted to Tsinghua School.

  Throughout his life, Wen was an outstanding student. From year to year he was viewed as the strongest student in literature and art, and was active in the school's drama, poetry and art societies.

  From 1922 to 1925, Wen studied in America. He returned to China in July 1925, accepting a number of academic posts, including the Dean of Studies at the Beijing Art College, Dean of the Foreign Language Department at Qingdao University and also Dean of the Foreign Language School at Qingdao. In 1932, Wen was invited to be a professor in the Chinese Department at Tsinghua University. During this period, he conducted in-depth research of ancient Chinese literature and ancient writings and documents.

  In 1944, Wen went through great changes ideologically. He contacted revolutionary organizations under the leadership of the Communist Party, and enthusiastically took part in their democratic activities.
