Programs and Degrees

Brief History
In 1952, three years after the founding of the People's Republic of China, a nationwide restructuring of institutes of higher education was initiated, and Tsinghua University then became a multidisciplinary polytechnic university. Since the reform and opening of China to the rest of the world, Tsinghua has gradually resumed such disciplines as economics, management, science, humanities, social sciences, and law in order to meet the needs of the country's development. In late 1990s, under the guiding principle of "strengthening the University's academic power and interdisciplinary studies," Tsinghua formed a number of disciplinary groups such as mechanical engineering, information science and technology, civil engineering and hydraulic and hydropower engineering. In 1999, Tsinghua set up the School of Arts and Design by merging with the Central Academy of Arts and Design. This fusion has unified the sciences and the arts.

Tsinghua is now working to become a comprehensive university, using the strategy of "making full use of our advantage in engineering disciplines, speeding up the disciplinary development in sciences, humanities and social sciences, management, and arts, and seeking breakthroughs in life science and medical science."

In October 2001, the School of Medicine was established. In April 2002, the School of Journalism and Communication was founded. Currently, Tsinghua University has various disciplines such as science, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, economics, management and arts, which lay the foundation for becoming an all-inclusive university.

Undergraduate and Graduate Combined Programs
In 1996 Tsinghua adopted the educational model of combining undergraduate study with graduate study in all the engineering disciplines. Meanwhile the five-year engineering program was cut to four years. The educational model for the students in science, economics, management, humanities and social sciences and law is "four years of undergraduate study plus two years of graduate study." In addition to this, according to the principle of interdisciplinary studies, we also cultivate multi-faceted professionals by providing secondary bachelor's degree programs to some of the graduate students.

SRT Project
In order to improve students' breadth of knowledge and better promote quality education, Tsinghua has carried out the "Student Research Training Project" (SRT). By the end of 2003, over 5,000 students have participated in more than 2,400 SRT projects, receiving training in scientific areas sooner than their counterpart students in other colleges and universities. The students' originality and awareness of the need for it have been greatly advanced. By now, the participation rate reached 40 percent of all undergraduate students.

Ph.D. Student's Innovation Program
In recent years, the University set up a series of doctoral funds to develop student's innovative awareness and skills with the hope to improve the quality of doctoral graduate. The funds are the ¡°Innovation Fund for Ph.D. Student's Scientific Research¡±, ¡°Doctoral Fund of International Exchange¡±, ¡°Doctoral Networking Fund ¡±, and ¡°Award Fund of Excellent Doctoral Dissertations ¡±. These funds provide the necessary conditions for the innovation among Ph.D. students. In addition, a series of activities such as ¡°Doctoral Academic Forum¡± have been carried out, which create an academic culture. Tusinghua has 39 papers selected as the Excellent Doctoral Dissertations by the National Evaluation Institute of Degrees and Graduate Education. It has been four years for Tsinghua to be the No. 1 in terms of number of paper selected among colleges and university in China.

Tsinghua has produced more than 100,000 graduates in its 93-year history.

The Career Center of Tsinghua is responsible for management, guidance and service in graduate's job seeking. The professionals in the center explain career objectives and job-seeking strategies, help plan students' careers, develop attitude toward life and career and motivate them to serve the country. And now, a complete career service system in Tsinghua is in place.
