Graduate Education at Tsinghua University

Tsinghua University established the Graduate School in June 1984, the first one in China's institutions of higher learning after the 1978 restoration of graduate education. In 1995, the Graduate School won the first national assessment of graduate schools in the whole country.

At present, the Graduate School has developed a complete graduate cultivation pattern which consists of the disciplines of science and engineering, as well as the disciplines of arts, history, philosophy, laws, economics and education. It is one of the first institutions in China to obtain the rights of conferring doctoral degrees and master degrees to employees who have the same educational level as graduates. It is also one of the first trial operation institutions cultivating and developing masters candidates for engineering and for business administration (MBA). Therefore, it has become a key base in the implement of the Regulation of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degree and the cultivation of high-level professional talents.

The Graduate School has conducted a series of reforms on "the remaining enrollment qualification for students after their two-year working experience", "dissertation doctors cultivation", "graduate candidates' social practice", "doctoral candidates concurrently teaching", and "excellent undergraduates trying for doctor degree directly", aiming to strengthen the development of tutorial teams, courses, practice bases and key disciplines.

Now the Graduate School has more than 2,000 graduate supervisors, of whom 416 have been appointed as supervisors of doctoral candidates by the Disciplinary Appraisal Committee of the State Council, 18 are members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 19 are members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. More than 800 courses are designated for graduate candidates.

The Graduate School has established many public laboratories for graduate candidates, such as the Laboratory of Modern Testing Technology, the Laboratory of Computer System Development and Application, the Laboratory of Computer Control and Emulation on Mechanical System, the Laboratory of Digital Signal Treatment, the Laboratory of Modern Physical and Chemical Testing Technology, and the Laboratory of Computer Interface Technology.

Its Key Discipline units of Mode Identification and Intelligent Control, Solid Mechanics, and Electrical Engineering were awarded the special-class state prize on Excellent National Teaching Achievements for China's Institutions of Higher Learning in 1989,1993 and 1997. In 1991, 46 graduates were awarded the title of "Graduate's Degree Acquirer with Outstanding Accomplishments in China" by the State Education Ministry.

In 1997, nearly 1,900 foreign and domestic graduate candidates joined the Graduate School, of whom 427 were doctoral candidates. In that year there was a total of 5,218 graduate candidates pursuing their studies at the university, of whom 1,776 were doctoral candidates. It has accomplished the conferring of more than 10,000 graduate degrees, of which 1,568 are for the doctor's degree and 10,042 for the master's degree.

The graduate education of Tsinghua University has always focused on the improvement of graduates' over-all quality with an emphasis on moral education.
