From Sept 1 to 4, Qiu Yong, secretary of the CPC Tsinghua University Committee, led a delegation to Germany to deepen educational and technological cooperation between Tsinghua University and Germany, contributing to the development of the China-Germany comprehensive strategic partnership.
The delegation visits RWTH Aachen University
On the morning of Sept 2, Qiu Yong and his delegation visited RWTH Aachen University and held talks with Rector Ulrich Rüdiger. Qiu introduced Tsinghua’s latest progress in advancing AI-enabled education and implementing its Global Strategy. He noted that the two universities share a strong foundation for cooperation, with the dual master’s degree program standing as a landmark achievement in China-Germany educational collaboration. Tsinghua places great emphasis on the deep integration of technological innovation and industrial innovation, and Qiu expressed hope that both sides would strengthen practical cooperation in more areas, seize the opportunities brought by AI development, and jointly promote the integration of educational transformation, scientific progress, and social development.
Rector Rüdiger outlined the current development of RWTH Aachen University, describing Tsinghua as one of its most important strategic partners and emphasizing that innovation is a shared characteristic of both institutions. He expressed readiness to work with Tsinghua to build more bridges for China-Germany cooperation in education, science and technology, and people-to-people exchanges.
That afternoon, Qiu attended a symposium on EU–China science and technology cooperation on climate change and energy transformation, and delivered remarks. The symposium was jointly hosted by Tsinghua University’s Institute for Carbon Neutrality and Germany's Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. Qiu noted that, as key players in the global green transition, China and Europe share both important responsibility and a common vision in addressing climate change and advancing clean energy. Tsinghua has long leveraged its multidisciplinary strengths to cultivate high-level innovative talent and accelerate the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development. He expressed hope that the partnership with the Wuppertal Institute would continue to reach new heights through joint research, academic exchange, and innovation, injecting fresh momentum into global sustainable development.
Michael Dedek, administrative managing director of the Wuppertal Institute, stated that climate change and the transformation of energy and industrial systems are shared challenges for both China and Europe, and that scientific and technological cooperation is key to tackling them. He expressed confidence in the broad prospects for bilateral cooperation and noted great potential for further collaboration in the future.
Tsinghua University and the Wuppertal Institute sign an MoU
Witnessed by Qiu Yong and Peter Hennicke, senior advisor and honorary president of the Wuppertal Institute, the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding. At the symposium, Guan Dabo, deputy dean of Tsinghua's Institute for Carbon Neutrality, and Lukas Hermwille, co-head of the Research Unit Transformative Industrial Policy at the Wuppertal Institute, shared insights on their respective contributions to the EU-China Flagship Initiative on Climate Change and Biodiversity. Experts and scholars from both countries also engaged in discussions on key issues and policy pathways related to industrial and energy transformation.
Tsinghua University and Technische Universität Berlin sign an extension letter.
On Sept 3, Qiu visited Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin) and held talks with President Fatma Deniz on strengthening joint research in key disciplines and cultivating top-tier innovative talent. The two leaders jointly signed an extension letter for the Tsinghua-TU Berlin Dual Master's Degree Program in Architecture. Qiu also visited a research laboratory and exchanged views with Jürgen Weidinger, head of Landscape Architecture Design at TU Berlin.
During the visit, Qiu also met with representatives of Tsinghua alumni working in Germany.
Representatives from the Office of International Affairs, along with faculty from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Industrial Engineering, the Institute for Carbon Neutrality, the School of Architecture and the School of Education, participated in the visit.
