Professor Drew Shindell appointed Honorary Professor at Tsinghua University

On March 6, Professor Drew Shindell, Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Nicholas Professor of Earth Sciences at Duke University, and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Panel of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), was appointed Honorary Professor of Tsinghua University and delivered the 266th lecture of the Global Vision Lecture Series. Yang Bin, Vice Chancellor of Tsinghua University Council, attended the event and presented the honorary professor appointment letter. The ceremony was hosted by He Kebin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Dean of the Institute for Carbon Neutrality, and Professor in the School of Environment at Tsinghua University, and was attended by over 150 faculty members and students from the School of Environment and other institutions.

Yang Bin announced the decision on behalf of Tsinghua University and conferred the honorary title to Professor Shindell. Yang hopes that Professor Shindell will leverage his extensive international influence to strengthen Tsinghua’s collaborations with world-leading universities, advance joint talent cultivation and major scientific projects, and jointly address pressing global challenges in pursuit of a shared future for humankind.

Professor Wang Shuxiao, Vice Chairperson of the School Council, School of Environment, introduced Professor Shindell’s distinguished academic contributions. As a world-leading scientist in climate science, atmospheric sciences, and energy–environment systems, Professor Shindell has profoundly shaped our understanding of the connections between climate change, air pollution, and public health.

Professor Shindell then delivered a keynote lecture titled “Holistic Cost–Benefit Analyses of Climate and Air Pollution”, quantifying the environmental impacts of sustainable development, comparing policy choices and low-carbon transition scenarios, and providing scientific support and decision-making references for optimizing emission reduction strategies.

During the Q&A session, faculty members and students engaged in in-depth discussions with Professor Shindell on cutting-edge topics. Professor He Kebin presented him with a commemorative plaque of the Global Vision Lecture Series.

The event was co-hosted by the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, the School of Environment, and the State Key Laboratory of Regional Environmental Safety.

Launched in 2007, the Global Vision Lecture Series has now held 266 sessions and has become a key platform for broadening the international outlook of Tsinghua’s faculty and students and deepening global academic cooperation.
