Professor Luo Kaihong at the Center for Combustion Energy, Department of Energy and Power Engineering, has been awarded the 2025 George Westinghouse Gold Medal by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Established in 1952, the award is named after George Westinghouse, a pioneering figure in modern industry, and honors eminent achievement or distinguished service in the power field of mechanical engineering. Professor Luo is the 68th recipient in the award’s history.

Professor Luo Kaihong receives 2025 George Westinghouse Gold Medal “for groundbreaking contributions to digital and AI-enhanced analysis, control, prediction, design and optimization of energy and power systems, leading to accelerated research and development, increased energy efficiency, lower emissions and carbon footprint, and improved sustainability”, according to the Award Committee.

This marks another major international accolade in engineering science for Professor Luo, following his receipt of the 2021 AIAA Energy Systems Award, and the 2022 ASME James Harry Potter Gold Medal - a top honor in the science and application of thermodynamics.

As a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a Member of Academia Europaea – The Academy of Europe, Professor Luo currently serves as Director of the Center for Combustion Energy at Tsinghua University.

His research focuses on energy, power, and interdisciplinary science, with internationally recognized achievements in the study as well as physics-based and data-driven simulation across the macro-, meso-, and micro-scales. His work has had significant impact on academia and industry worldwide through publications, innovations and patents.

Professor Luo is also a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers as well as an Inaugural Fellow of the Combustion Institute.
