Tsinghua University held the opening convocation for its 2026 graduate students on the morning of August 27. Secretary of the CPC Tsinghua University Committee Qiu Yong, Tsinghua University President Li Luming, and other leaders of the University attended the opening convocation. Tsinghua Vice President Wang Yayu presided over the ceremony.

Tsinghua University President Li Luming delivered a speech titled “Embracing the World with Openness and Inclusiveness,” extending a welcome to the new graduate students on behalf of the University’s faculty, students, and staff. He said that openness and integration represent an inevitable trend in the development of human society and an essential choice for jointly addressing common challenges. Openness and inclusiveness are also an important source of the enduring vitality of Chinese civilization.
Li noted that, through its commitment to openness in education, Tsinghua University has forged a path toward building a world-class university rooted in China. He expressed his hope that students would deepen their cultural roots and embrace the world with confidence grounded in their heritage; cultivate an inclusive mindset and embrace the world with a broad perspective; and shoulder the mission of the times and embrace the world with innovation-driven leadership. He encouraged students to move forward with determination on the path of openness and contribute their youthful strength to building a stronger country, achieving national rejuvenation, and advancing human progress.

Luo Guangsheng, an academician and a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, delivered a speech on behalf of all faculty members. As they embarked on their graduate studies, he encouraged the students to gradually transform their way of thinking, to set their academic aspirations on addressing the country's most critical needs and exploring the frontiers of their disciplines, and to pursue their research with patience, perseverance, and long‑term commitment. With such resolve, they could forge ahead and achieve breakthroughs.

Chen Zihan, president of the Tsinghua Graduate Student Union, shared his reflections and insights from eight years at Tsinghua, encouraging new students to step beyond disciplinary boundaries, spark new ideas through interdisciplinary exchange, pursue their passions, and answer the call of the country with a steadfast commitment to serving the nation. He encouraged them to make every step of their boundless exploration a vibrant expression of their own identity—one that belongs uniquely to them and is shaped by no one else.

Zuo Weibo，a doctoral student from the School of Life Sciences, spoke on behalf of the incoming students. He shared his story of more than a decade of pursuing knowledge, from a small mountain village to Tsinghua University. Looking ahead, he urged fellow students to honor Tsinghua’s legacy, integrate their personal aspirations into the broader cause of national development, boldly explore new paths, and persevere with resilience, striving through concrete actions to write a youth chapter worthy of the times.

Tsinghua University held the opening convocation in a hybrid online and offline format. The event was also live-streamed on the "Rain Classroom" platform. The incoming graduate students from the Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School attended the ceremony online, along with their families，as well as faculty, alumni, and friends from various sectors who support the University's development.
