Wang
Dazhong was born in Hebei Province, China. After graduated from Nankai Middle
School in Tianjin, he was admitted to Tsinghua University and graduated from the
Department of Engineering Physics in 1958. He was an on-job graduate student at Tsinghua
University, 1961-1962. He was engaged in the research of high temperature gas-cooled
reactor (HTGR) at the Nuclear Research Center, Juelich (KFA Juelich), Germany as a
visiting scholar in 1980-1982, and was awarded the Doctor of Natural Science at Aachen
University of Technology, (RWTH Aachen), Germany in 1982. Professor Wang Dazhong was the
Director of the Institute of Nuclear Energy Technology (INET) of Tsinghua University, Vice
Chairman of the Tsinghua University Council, Chief Scientist of the First Expert Committee
in the Area of Energy of the National High Technology Development Program. Now he is the
President of Tsinghua University, professor of nuclear engineering, Ph.D. advisor, member
of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council, member of the Expert Committee of
the National Bureau of Nuclear Safety, Vice President of the China Nuclear Society,
President of the Beijing Nuclear Society. He was named as the National Advanced Scientist
in 1989. Professor Wang Dazhong was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
in 1993. Professor Wang Dazhong had participated in the design, construction and operation
of the Experimental Shielding Reactor built by ourselves in 1960s. Since mid 1970s, he was
responsible for the research and development of high temperature gas-cooled reactor, he
put forward the new concept of a modular type high temperature gas-cooled reactor, and had
obtained the invention patents in Germany, United States of America, Japan, etc. In the
1980s, Professor Wang initiated a new research area on nuclear heating reactor, and was
responsible for the design and construction of a 5MW Nuclear Heating Reactor, which was
the first integrated vessel type heating reactor being put into operation successfully in
the world.. He is also leading the research on using the nuclear heating reactor for
co-generation of electricity and heat as well as air conditioning, and desalination of sea
water by using nuclear energy. His research achievements are highly appraised by the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
Wu
Liangyong, Professor of the Department of Architecture, Academician of the Chinese
Academy of Sciences and Engineering, was born in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province on May 7, 1922.
He graduated in 1944 at a Bachelor of Architecture in the Department of Architecture,
National Central University, Chongqing. He worked with the Professor Liang Sicheng in
founding the Department of Architecture in Tsinghua University since 1946, and engaged in
teaching, researching and practicing on the fields of architecture, urban planning and
designing. He took the seat of Deputy Director and Director of the Department of
Architecture, the Vice President of the International Union of Architects, President of
the World Society for Science of Human Settlements, as well as the President of the Urban
Planning Society of China, Vice President of the Architectural Society of China, Vice
President of the China Society of Urban Studies. A team led by him carried out a study of
Olympic construction in Beijing form and was awarded the First Award for Scientific and
Technological Progress by the State Education Commission. Since 1987 , a research project
of Beijing Ju'er Hutong new courtyard house was charged by him and has won a few of awards
in the national level, a gold medal by Asian Architects of Regional Council Award for
Architecturemand UN World Habitat Award .His book on "A General Theory of
Architecture won the 1st prize for Scientific and Technological Research Progress, State
Education Commission. He was promoted as National Advanced Worker, won He-Liang-He-Li
Prize in 1995, and received UIA Architectural Education Prize in 1996.
Zhang Guangdou, Professor of the Department of Water Resources and Hydroelectric
Engineering, Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Member of Chinese Academy of
Engineering. Well Known Water Resources and Hydroelectric Engineering Expert. Born in
Changshu, Jiangsu Province on May 1, 1912. B.S.C.E., Shanghai Jiaotong University, 1934;
M.S.C.E., University of California, 1936; M.S.C.E, Harvard University, 1937. Honorary Vice
President of University Council of Tsinghua University. Honorary Director of Chinese
Society of Hydraulic Engineering, and Adviser of Chinese Society of Hydroelectric
Engineering. Foreign Member of Mexican National Academy of Engineering. Engaged in
teaching, research and construction of water resources and hydroelectric engineering. In
charge of design of Miyun Reservoir, received Excellent Design Award of Beijing
Municipality. Participated design of Gezhouba Project, received Science and Technology
Progress Extraordinary Award of State Council. In Charge of research project on
"Scale Geomechanic Model and Finite Element Analysis of Rock Foundation
Stability", received National Science and Technology Progress II class Award. Author
of "Hydraulic Structures" Vol.I and II, published more than 40 papers, including
"Geomechanic Model of Overall Sliding Resisting Stability of Arch Dam",
"Dynamic Interaction of Arch Dam", "Analysis of Vibration Measurements of
Chuisui Arch Dam", "Earthquake Resisting of Concrete Dams", etc.
Specialized in solving difficult design problems of water resources and hydroelectric
engineering, such as design of Three Gorges Project. National Advanced Worker, 1958, Hoas
International Award of University of California, 1981.
Huang Wenxi, Hydraulic Structure and Geotechnical Engineering expert. Born on March
1, 1909 in Shanghai, China. Graduated from the National Central University in 1929.
Receibed the degree of M.S.(1935) and the degree of S.C.D.(1937) from the University of
Michingan, U.S.A.. Since 1937 he served successively as professor of the Department of
Hydraulic Engineering of National Central University , Nanking University, East China
Hydraulic Institute and Tsinghua University, During the same period, he served
successively as research engineer in Central Hydraulic Research Institute, director of
Nanking Hydraulic Research Institute and deputy director of China Hydraulic Research
Institute. He has been working simultaneously as a teacher and research engineer for about
60 years and had reined a large number of hydraulic and geotechnical engineers. He was the
first man teaching the course of soil mechanics and establishing the soil mechanics
laboratory in Chinese universities. In order to fulfill the public demand he has
established a factory to manufacture the field and laboratory testing equipment, while he
was director of Nanking Hydraulic Research Institute, He is a founder and forerunner of
the Science of Soil Mechanics in China. He also hold counsel with the designers and
constructors on many important engineering works on the Yellow River, Huai River and
HaiRiver, besides the 3 Gorge Project, Baosan Steel Works and Wuhan Yangtse Bridge. He has
also introduced many advanced techniques in hydraulic and geotechnical engineering into
China and made great contribution to Chinese construction.
Pan Jiluan, Professor of the Department of
Mechanical Engineering, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Born in 1927 in
Ruichang, Jiangxi Province. Distinguished welding engineering expert. Graduated from
Tsinghua University. Postgraduate from Harbin University of Technology. President of
Nanchang University. Participated in the establishment of the first batch of Welding
Departments in Chinese universities. Developed heavy section electro-slag welding process
and surfacing technology of heavy forging die, which were applied in industries in 1950's.
Argon gas shielded arc welding process was developed for nuclear reactor manufactured in
early 1960's. On basis of it accomplished welding production of the first nuclear reactor
made in China by own effort. Subsequently designed and developed the first electron beam
welding machine in China. Detailed study on the mechanism of hot crack formation during
welding was also carried out in the same time. He started to study arc sensor since 1978,
and then established the first physical mathematical model of the static and dynamic
characteristics of arc sensor developed successfully distinctive arc sensor and automatic
seam tracking system. In 1980's he invented QH-ARC welding arc control method in which
original idea of using the multi-segmental, steep uprising and scanning output
characteristics of the power source to control the arc were created. The invention
provided a new way for further development of welding arc control and process automation.
Wang Buxuan, Professor of the Dept. of Thermal
Engineering, Director of the Research Institute of Thermal Science and Engineering.
Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Born on Feb.5, 1922 in Jiangsu. Won his
B.S. from Southwestern Associated University in 1943 and M.S. from Purdue Univesrsity, USA
in 1949. He is an outstanding scientist and educator in mechanical engineering, especially
thermal science and technology, a pioneer of engineering thermophysics discipline in
China, and serves as the President of Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics. He is
well-known in world community of thermal science and serves for many international
academic societies as a leading individual . He is editor or member of editorial boad of
famous international journals, such as "Int. J. Heat and Mass Transfer"£¬"Int.J.
Thermophysics" and "Int. J. Heat and Fluid Flow" etc. He was elected as
Active Member of the New York Academy of Science. He has participated in the drawing and
their development of national sciences and technology in China. Many research achievements
he has reached were awarded by the State Committee for Promotion and by the State
Education Commission. So far, he had authored or co-authored over 300 journal and
national/international conference papers, 10 monographs or textbooks ,and edited 6
international conference proceedings. He supervised a large number of Dr.-Eng. and MS
graduated, some of whom have become outstanding individuals in many related fields in
China.
Zhang Bo, Professor of the Department of
Computer Science and Technology, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was
born in Fuqing, Fujianm in 1935. He graduated from the Department of Automatic Control,
Tsinghua University and has been working there until now. He was a visiting scholar of
University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, U.S.A.. He is now the director of State Key
Laboratory of Intelligent Technology and Systems. Recently, his main interests are the
theory and applications of artificial intelligence , neural networks and genetic
algorithms, knowledge engineering, intelligent robotics and intelligent control. More than
100 papers and 3 books have been published in these fields. He presented a quotient space
theory of problem solving in artificial intelligence. Based on the multi-grained problem
solving theory, the new principles of uncertainty management, qualitative reasoning, fuzzy
analysis and the combination of evidences are proposed. He also presented a new approaches
od multi-level information synthesis and multi-level planning and searching, so the
capability and computational complexity of machine problem solving are inproved. In neural
networks, new approaches for analyzing several neural models and new learning methods were
suggested. Due to his academic achievements, he won the ICL European Artificial
Intelligence Prize, the Third Class of National Natural Science Prize of China, the First
and Second Class of Science and Technology Progress Prize of State Educational Commission,
and the First Class of Science and Technology Progress Prize issued by Ministry of
Electronic Industry.
Li Yanda, Professor of the Department of
Automation. Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Specialist in signal
processing and intelligent control. Graduated from the Dept. of Automatic control,
Tsinghua University in 1959. Dean of the School of Information Science Technology,
Tsinghua university. He has been mainly engaged in the theory of Signal processing and the
method of seismic data processing and discrimination. He proposed a new method for time
delay estimation using signal reconstruction with phase function only and a new theorem of
signal reconstruction, which made required points reduce from N/2 to N/6.He also proposed
a new algorithm, which reconstructed minimum phase signal from its amplitude spectrum
only, and a theorem of projective relation for the image reconstruction from in complete
projection. In order to apply signal processing and pattern recognition technologies to
seismic data processing and discrimination, he presented a new method to improve the
resolution of seismic section by means of well-log data and a method for high resolution
velocity spectrum estimation. Those methods have been used in Shengli Oil Field and other
oil field successfully. He has published over 80 papers, and two books.
Wang Jiading, Professor of the Department of
Chemical Engineering, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The current director of
the State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering. He was born in 1919 in CHongqing. He
received his B.S. from Southwestern Associated University in 1941 and M.S. of chemical
engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1945. Over a long period of
time, he engaged in research and teaching in chemical engineering and nuclear chemical
engineering, and made a great contributions to China's atomic energy industry and the
development of the chemical engineering discipline. He led and participated in the
"study and development of technology and equipment of nuclear fuel reprocessing
"from 1958 to 1966. He promoted the replacement of precipitation method with solvent
extraction in China's nuclear fuel reprocessing technology. Since 1980's he has been
engaged in the applied and fundamental researching on liquid-fluid extraction process and
has made significant achievements on two-phase fluid flow characteristics in column
extractors; mass transfer characteristics and novel technology and methods in solvent
extraction. He received an Honorary Medal for Devoting to the Science and Technolory of
National Defense in 1988. He was named "Advanced Worker" at the Tenth
Anniversary of the establishment of the State Key Laboratories and received a "Golden
Ox" Award.
Zhu Jing, Professor of the Department of Materials Science and
Engineering. Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Born in October, 1938 in
Shanghai. After graduated from the Department of Physics in Fudan University in 1962, she
started her study in facial specialty of material's microstructure in Central Iron and
Steel Research Institute. Also she is concurrent professor of the Department of Materials
Science of Shanghai Jiaotong University and the Shandong University of Technology. She is
director of Chinese Material Research Society and Chinese Electron Microscopy Society. She
is invited as a specialist in Session of Evaluation Panel of Department of Materials
Sciences and Engineering of National Nature Science Foundation of China. She had taken
advanced study and worked under the direction of J.M.Cowley in U.S.A. She has been engaged
in scientific research on material's microstructure characterization for more than thirty
years and made many creative contributions. She was the first one in the world to discover
the coherent electron microdiffraction effect from a single planar fault and gave out the
explanation by kinematics diffraction theory; her paper on coherent electron
microdiffraction effect from a single antipode domain boundary is an original document in
the electron microdifraction world. She also made important work in developing super-high
strength steel, which is in urgent need in China. She has won more than 10 prizes by state
and ministry for her two dozens of scientific research results, including the National
Award for Science and Technology Progress, the National Nature Science Prize and ministry
level prizes. In her publication list there are a book dealing with high spatial
resolution analytical electron microscopy and more than 120 academical papers. She has
been awarded "State Outstanding Specialist","National March 8 Red Banner
Pacesetter"and "Advanced Worker of China" by the state council, etc.
Li Zhijian, Professor of Institute of Microelectronics, Member of Chinese Academy
of Sciences. Born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province in 1928. Graduated from the Department of
Physics of Zhejiang University in 1951 and got his "Kogudart" degree from the
University of Leningrad, USSR in 1958. He has been working in Tsinghua University since
1958 and was in the position of Head of the Semiconductor Group of the Department of
Electronics Engineering and Director of the Institute of Microelectronics for years. Now
he is the Vice Chairman of the University Academic Committee and Chairman of the Institute
Academic Committee. He possesses the following position outside the T.H. University:
Member of Chinese National Association of Science and Technology, Vice President of
Chinese Institute of Electronics, Vice Chairman of Chinese Semiconductor and Integrated
Technology Association, Vice Chairmen of the Editorial Board of : "Chinese Journal of
Semiconductors" and Member of the Editorial Board of "Electronic Sinica".
He is also the member of the Academic Committee of several National Laboratories, such as
"Super Latlice Laboratory", "Surface Physics Laboratory" etc. His
research field is silicon device physics and microclectronics technology . He has won
twice the 2nd Rank National Awards for the Promotion of Progress of Science and
Technology, Once the 2nd Rank National Award for Invention due to his work on "LSI
Rapid heat processing". His works on VLSI technology and corresponding devices had
won 4 times the 1st rank Awards for Promotion of Progress of Science and technology of the
Ministry and the National Commission Grade. His work on MOS Physics was won twice the 2nd
rank above mentioned Award of National Education Commission. He is the chief editor of two
books and has published more than 130 scientific papers.
Guan Zhaoye, Professor of the Department of Architecture,
Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Born on Oct 4, 1929 in Beijing.
Included in "The International who's Intellectuals", 16th, Ed. International
Biographical Center in Cambridge, England. He won his Bachelor Degree of Architecture in
Tsinghua University, and worked as a visiting Scholar in the Department of Architecture of
MIT, 1981-82. He has published many books and papers , including: "Active Urban
Architecture", 1988; "London as Compared with Beijing", 1990;
"Appropriateness Must Come Before Luxury and Novelty", 1992 and Chinese
Translation, "From Bauhaus to Our House", Tom Wolfe, 1984. The awards he had won
including: Yunnan University Library, the 1st Prize Awarded by State Education Committee,
1989; International Design Competition of Bibliotheca Alexandrine, Special Merit awarded
by UIA, 1989; Subway Station "Dong-si-shi-tiao" elected as "one of the 10
Outstanding Buldings in the 1980's in Beijing ",1990; Tsinghua University Library,
the 1st Prize awarded by State Education Committee, the 1st Prize awarded by Ministry of
Construction, Gold Medal Prize by the State Council and the ASC award, Other 1st prize

Gu
Xiasheng, Professor of the Department of Environmental Engineering, Academician of the
Chinese Academy of Engineering. Born on May 6, 1918 in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. B.S.(C.E.),
Shanghai Jiaotong University, 1941. M.S.(S.E.), Texas A£¦M University, 1948. Former
Chairman of the Committee of Textbooks and Teaching Materials on Environmental Engineering
for Colleges and Universities of National Education Commission, China, Beijing Municipal
Government Advisor for Water Supply and Wastewater Engineering, Editorial Advisor of the
International Journal for Development Technology (U.K), etc. He has been engaged in
teaching and research on the field of environmental engineering for many years and has
published 7 books and more than 90 papers. He has awarded Science and Technology Progress
Prize by National Education Commission for his research on "Technology of Anaerobic
Treatment for High Strength Organic Wastewater". His other researches include: new
biological treatment process for high-strength sulfate-organic wastewater biodegradability
of refractory organic and treatment technology; stabilization pond and biological removal
of phosphorus, etc.; the results of which are of great theoretical and practical value. He
was also awarded Best Textbook Prizes by National Education Commission for his books
"Microbiology of Water and Wastewater" and "Water Quality Control
Engineering".
Jin Guofan. Graduated from Department of Mechanical Engineering, Peking University
in 1950. Since 1952, he has been working in Tsinghua University. Now he is professor of
the Dept. of Precision Instruments and Dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering in
Tsinghua University. He has been a visiting professor of Erlangen University in Germany,
Heriot-Watt University in Britain and Portland State University in U.S.A.. He served as
the vice-president of the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 1991-1995 and
was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1994. His current
research interests are computer-generated holograms, binary optics and optical computing.
He led a group developed the first three dimensional optical grating measuring machine
which awarded the Prize of the State Science and Technology Conference. He was involved in
many projects, such as erasable optical disk displayer, laser gyro, birefringent unable
dual frequency laser, tongue diagnostic system etc.. His projects of "Binary
optics" projects has been awarded as the first and second class of the prize of the
Progress Award in Science and Technology from the State Educational Committee. He wrote a
book "Computer-generated Holograms" which is the only book of this kind in
China. Due to the outstanding contribution in optics he was elected as a fellow of the
Optical Society of America(OSA) and the International Optical Engineering Society(SPIE).
Huang Kezhi (HWANG Keh-Chih), Professor of the Department of Engineering Mechanics,
Member of the Chinese Academy of Science, born in 1927 in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province. He
graduated from Zhong Zheng University, Jiangxi, and finished postgraduate study at
Tsinghua University. He is a specialist in solid mechanics in China, Chairman of the
Scientific Committee of Tsinghua University, Director of the Institute of Engineering
Mechanics, Head of the Group of Evaluation on Mechanics of the Committee of the Academic
Degree of the State Council, Executive Member of the International Congress of Fracture,
Executive Member of the Far East and Oceanic Society of Fracture, Member of the General
Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Governor at
Large of the International Congress of the Mechanical Behavior of Materials. He has been
engaged for years in scientific research in the theory and application of fracture
mechanics, including theory of material strengthening and toughening, strain gradient
effect and size effect, application of fracture mechanics in nuclear reactor and pipe
engineering, and research in constitutive theory of materials, including constitutive
theory of materials at large deformation, constitutive theory of materials with
transformation (shape memory alloys, ferroelectric materials). He has been the principal
investigator of seven national key research projects. As the first winner, he has got 11
prizes of international, national and ministerial levels, including the Special Grade
National Prize for Outstanding Educational Achievement, the 3rd Grade National Natural
Science Prize and the 1st Grade Prize for the Science and Technology Progress by the State
Education Commission. Besides, he has been the winner of the Prize for Outstanding
Educational Achievement by Hong Kong B.I.C.Club, and co-winner of 4 prizes. He has
published 5 monographs and more than 170 scientific papers.
Zhou Bingkun, professor of the Department of Electronic Engineering, An Laser and
Opto-electronics expert, was born in Sichuan, China in 1936. He graduated from the
Department ofRadio Electronics in Tsinghua University in 1956. At present he is a member
of Chinese Academy of Sciences, vice-president of the National Natural Science Foundation,
Director of the Institute of Electronics in Tsinghua University , Vice Director of the
Institute of Semiconductor of CAS and Vice President of the Chinese Optical Society. He
has been engaged in research and teaching on laser and optoelectronics for a long time.
His interests include laser physics and devices, semiconductor laser and applications,
semiconductor laser pumped solid state laser ,doped fiber amplifiers and lasers, high
speed optical fiber communications and optical switching. He has got scientific
achievements in the area of "semiconductor laser pumped solid state laser",
"single crystal fiber growth and devices"," fiber ring cavity and their
application" and eight awards. He is the author or co-authors of over 80 papers and
one book : "Laser Principle", which was awarded the state excellent prize.
Zhang Wei, Professor of Dept. of Engineering Mechanics. Member
of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); Mwmber of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE);
Foreign Member of Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering (IVA). Born in Beijing in 1913. B.
Sc. in C. E., Tangshan Chiao-Tung University; D.I.C. Imperial College, London; Dr.-Ing.,
Techn. Hochschule, Berlin. Eminant Scientist in Mechanics and Educator. Former Vice
President of the Chinese Assoc. Sci. and Techn.. Former Vice-President of the World
Federation of Engineering Organizations(WFEO); Senior M. VDI; Senior of M. IABSE; M. GAMM;
Chairman of Mao Yishen Foundation for Sci., Techn. and Educ.. Honorary Vice-Chairman of
the Tsinghua Univ. Senate. Research field: Theory of Elasticity. In recent years
concentrated on theory of plates and shells, especially on strength, stability and
vibration of toroidal shells and curved pipes and their applications in structural
integraty and safety assessment of nuclear power station and fast-breeder reactor.
Analytical, semi-analytical, numerical and experimental methods are widely used in his
analysis of practice-oriented strength and stability problems of structures. He devoted
recently also to a comparative study of the historical development of Engineering
Education of Europe and the United States of America with China's . He is editing a
comprehensive bibliography of the theory of shells and its applications. Awards among

Long Yuqiu, Professor the Department of civil engineering, Member of the Chinese
Academy of Engineering. Bron in Anhua, Hunan Province in 1926. Graduated from Tsinghua
University. Expert in civil engineering and structural mechanics. Director of the Advisory
Committee of Engineering Mechanics, State Education Commission. Director of China Civil
Engieering Society. Editor in Chief of Journal"Advances in Structural
Engineering". Five pioneering achievements in scientific research have been obtained
in the field of finite element method(FEM), variational principle and structural analysis:
generalized conforming FEM, sub-region mixed FEM, new shell element, subregion variational
principle and the variational principle with arbitrary parameters. He is the editor of
"The Design Regulations for Thin Shell Structures". 140 research papers and 18
books have been published. He won the Outstanding Textbook Awards in 1988,1992 and 1996;
the Outstanding Education Award in 1993; the Progress Awards in Science and Technology of
the State Education Commission in 1986,1992 and 1994; the Academic Award by the Science
Committee of Beijing in 1984 and 1988; and the Guanhua Scientific Award in 1993.
Wu Youshou, Professor of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Member of the
Chinese Academy of Engineering. Born in Chaoan county, Guangdong Province in 1925. After
graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering in Tsinghua University, he served
as the chairman of the Department of Radio-Electronics (1981-84) and dean of Graduate
School((1984-90) in Tsinghua University, and the Deputy Vice President of the Science and
Technology Committee of The State Education Commission since 1991. He is one of the
founders of the Asian-Pacific Neural Network Assembly and assumed the President of the
Assembly in 1995-96. He is the editor of Journals: "Science in China",
"Chinese Journal of Electronics" and "Neuro Computing",and author or
co-author of 6 books such as "High Frequency Circuits" and "Chinese
Character Recognition-Principle, methodology and Realization". He is a well-known
Electronic Engineering educationist and one of the pioneers in digital communication in
China. To his credit, he proposed a new PCM encoder and performed an experimental digital
telephone system in 1958 which was the first one implemented in China. In the period of
1960-70s, he implemented several kinds of data transmission systems and micro-wave digital
communication systems which receives the National Science and Technology Congress Award
and won an honorable medal for his contribution on Science and Technology for National
Defense. He also made distinguished achievements in the study of Pattern Recognition and
Artificial Neural Networks. His research project-abilingual Chinese-English OCR system was
awarded as one of the outstanding achievements in electronics, and won the State Prize for
Science and Technology Progress in 1994.
Wu
Cheng, Professor of the Dept.of Automation. Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Born in Jan,1940 in Zhejiang, Chia. He graduated from the Dept. of Electrical Engineering
of Tsinghua University in 1962. and graduated from Graduate School of Tsinghua University
in 1966. As a faculty member of the University he worked until 1981. From 1981 to 1983,He
did research work at the Dept. of Systems Engineering of Cade Western Reserve University,
Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. Now he is the Chairman of National Computer Integrated
Manufacturing Systems Expert Steering Committee which belongs to China National High-Tech
R£¦D program (863 program), the Director of National CIMS Engineering Research Center. He
conducted to set up a National CIMS experimental base which approached the advanced world
level. The CIMS-ERC won the "University LEAD Award" of CIMS given by the Society
of Manufacturing Engineers of U.S.A. in 1994. He has paid a lot of efforts to promote CIMS
technology progress and transfer to Chinese industry. His research interests are system
integration, modeling, planning and scheduling of industrial lange complex systems. He has
published more than 60 papers.
Li Hengde, Professor of Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Member of
the Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE). Born in Luoyang, Henan in 1921. Graduated from
National Northwestern College of Engineering(B.S.), Carnegie Institute of
Technology(M.S.), University of Pennsylvania(Ph.D.). A scientist of nuclear and metallic
materials. Served as director of the Department of Engineering Physics of Tsinghua
University; senior research scientist(part time) of the Atomic Energy Research Institute
of CAS; director of the Department of Materials and Engineering Sciences of NSFC; member
of the Appraisal Committee of the State Academic Degree Commission, vice chairman of the
Metallurgy Group of the National Invention Award Committee, member of the National Award
Committee of Natural Science; member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese Nuclear
Society(CNS), president of the Society of Materials Science of the Chinese Society for
Metals; chief editor of "Progress of Material Science" and the "Journal of
Chinese Material Research". Now served as Director of the Research Institute of
Materials Science of Tsinghua University, Vice Chairman of National Foundation for
Outstanding Young Scientists, Vice President of the Chinese Nuclear Materials Society,
CNS, President of the Chinese Materials Research Society(C-MRS), President of the Chinese
Committee of International Union of Materials Research Societies(CC-IUMRS), and the Vice
President of the International Union of Materials Research Societies(IUMRS). Professor Li
was one of the earliest investigators on the deformation mechanisms of beryllium single
crystals to clarify the intrinsic brittleness of beryllium. He made his contributions in
studying the relationship between hydride distributions and the forming parameters of
zirconium tubing for nuclear applications in China. He also initiated studies on the
preparation of nuclear fuel kernels in China, and also on the radiation damage studies by
charged particles. He was a long time educator of nuclear material science in China. He
was the earliest one to start in China the area of research on modification of metals by
ion implantation. He directed the research and construction of the first multi-functional
equipment of ion beam assisted deposition(IBAD) in China and carried on a series of
studies of thin films and nano-scale multilayers by using IBAD. Since 1989 he has led his
group to initiate a new area to study natural bioceramics and structural mimicig. He holds
four national or ministerial awards. He published approximately one hundred representative
papers in various fields.
Lu
Qiang, Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University,
Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was born in Wuhu, Anhui. Graduated from the
Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University in 1959. He is engaged in
research on application of modern control theory to stabilizing control of power systems
for a long time, and has built up a new discipline of optimal control for power systems.
He had written a book ¡¶Power System Optimal Control¡·that is the first book in the
world in that field, awarded the National Award. He published 12 papers in the relevant
fields. Due to those valuable research achievements and awarded the National Natural
Science Award in 1988. The linear optimal excitation controllers invented by him have been
applied on line in a series of power plants, and have played an important role both in
security and economics. The achievement mentioned above also awarded the National Award of
Sciences and Technology. Since 1987, he has been engaging in the advanced research on the
subject of nonlinear control theory and its implementation for power systems. His new book
¡¶Nonliear Control of Power Systems¡·which is based on the differential geometric
approach has opened a new discipline of nonlinear optimal control of power systems. He
published two papers on IEEE/PES in that field. Recently, he has made significant research
results on digital nonlinear optimal excitation controllers.
Han Yingduo, Professor of the Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Member of the
Chinese Academy of Engineering. He was born in 1938 in Shenyang, Liaoning province. He
graduated and postgraduated from Tsinghua University in 1962 and in 1965 respectively. He
received Doctor degree from Erlangen-Nuernberg University in Germany. From 1986 to 1995 he
was vice-chairman and chairman of the E.E. Dept.. From 1989 up to now he is the Head of
Power Electronic Research Centre of Tsinghua University. He is also the Member of the
Standing Council of CSEE, Vice-chairman of Beijing Society of E.E., member of the Standing
Council of Chinese Promotion Union for Electrical Power Development, Vice-Editor of the
journal "Electric Power System and Automation" and Senior Member of IEEE. He has
been engaged for more than 30 years in education and research work on electric power
system and automation field. He has made many important contributions to Security and
Stability Analysis, Control, Optimal Planning of the long distance transmission systems
and interconnected power systems in China. He was awarded 3 prizes of State-level and 6
times of first or second rank prize of Province- or Ministry-level. The collaborated book
"Optimal Control of Electric Transmission Systems" was given the first prize of
China National Excellent Science & Technique Book. He has published 80 papers. Recent
years he is engaged in FACTS , Intelligent Control, Regional Stability Control, New
Dynamic Security Estimation and Control based on GPS.
Zhu Yongjun, Professor of the Institute of Nuclear Energy Technology, Member of
Chinese Academy of Engineering. Born in December 1929 in Jing County, Anhui Porvince.
Graduated from the Department of Chemistry, Tsinghua University in 1951. Took part in the
establishment of the Department of Engineering Physics in 1956 .Main field of research:
nuclear fuel reprocessing and solvent extraction chemistry of actinide elements. A study
on the solvent extraction technology of spent nuclear fuel was adopted by the nuclear
industry and a prize was awarded to this study at the National Science Conference. The
Solvent Extraction Technology for the Reprocessing of HTGR TH-U Fuel was awarded by
Chinese Academy of Sciences. A study on the Extraction Behavior of TRPO and the Separation
of Actinides from Highly Active Waste Solution was awarded a Prize of Science and
Technology progress (1st class) by the State Education Commission and a National Natural
Science Prize (3rd class ).
Li Sanli, Professor of Computer Science and Technology, Member of Chinese Academy
of Engineering. Born in Shanghai in 1935. He graduated from the Dep.of Radio Engineering
of Tsinghua University in 1955. He received Ph.D from Academy of Sciences of the previous
USSR. Currently he is Director of Research Institute of Computer Sciences and Engineering
in Tsinhua University, Joint Dean of College of Computer Engineering and Science at
Shanghai University, Chief Scientists of State "Climbing "Program in Computer
Project, Co-Chairman of Accreditation Committee in Computer Discipline of State Academic
Commission of state Council, Deputy Chief Editor of Editoried Board of "China
Computer Encyclopedia", Executive Director of China Computer Federation, President of
IEEE in China mainland and Board Director of EUROMICRO in Europe.He has been responsible
in making vacuum tube transistor, LSI and VLSI four generation computers in China. He has
made excellent contribution in computer architecture , especially in the field of Local
Area Network, Microprocessor System, RISC Architecture and RISCtechnology in China. He has
proposed firstly in the world the new concept of "Virtual Register"and
"Multiple Port Register File" which has been proved by the RISC products since
90 years. He has published 11 books, one of his book "RISC--Single and Multiple Issue
Architecture" has obtained the Toppest Award of "The Excellent Academic Book of
State Education Commission", He has published more than hundred papers in journals,
conference proceedings and the other periodicals.
Zhao Yufen, Professor of the Department of Chemistry, Member of the Chinese Academy
of Sciences. She was born in Qi county of Henan province of China in 1948. Her B.S.
Chemistry degree was obtained from Taiwan Tsinghua University, and Ph.D.Chemistry degree
obtained in 1975 from State University of New York Stony Brook with Professor
FaustoRamirez. She is a committee member of the Chinese Chemistry Society, and active
member-academician of the International Academy of Sciences, and member of the
International society for the Study of the Originof Life. Currently she is the dean of the
National Education Committee open laboratory of Bioorganic Phosphorus Chemistry, and the
vice-dean of School of Life Science and Engineering of Tsinghua University. Her research
fields are Organic Phosphorus Chemistry and Bio-organic Chemistry, especially on the
high-coordinated phosphorus chemistry and life chemistry. She has now five patents and
more than 120 papers published. She has been awarded the Second Prize of the Chinese
Academia Sinica, the Second Prize of National Education Committee, and the Chinese Young
Scientist Award.
Qian Yi, Professor of the Department of Environmental Engineering,
Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. She was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu province in
1936. She got bachelor degree in Tongji University and got master degree in Tsinghua
University. She is the director of State Key Joint Laboratory of Environmental Simulation
and Pollution Control, the member of the Environment and Resource Protection Committee of
Peoples Congress of China, the member of China Council of International Cooperation on
Environment and Development, the member of Executive Committee of World Federation of
Engineering Organization, the vice chairman of the General Committee of the International
Council of Scientific Unions, the director of the Teaching Directive Committee of National
Universities and Colleges on Environmental Engineering. Her major research direction is
water pollution control technology and mechanism. She has taken charge of several fields
of national key projects such as "Sewage Treatment and Reuse", "Anaerobic
Biological Treatment Technology for High Strength Organic Wastewater",
"Oxidation Pound for Sewage Treatment" and "Technology and Equipment for
Industrial Wastewater with High Strength Toxic and Hazardous Organic Pollutants". She
has received National Science and Technology Progress Award?2nd and 3rd class), the
science and technology progress award (1st and 2nd class) of State Educational Committee.
Her representative works are "Modern Wastewater Treatment Technology", "The
Prevention and Control of Industrial Environmental Pollution", "Environmental
Engineering Handbook" water pollution volume. She has published and presented almost
a hundred of articles in national and international journals and academic meetings.
Xu Xuchang, Professor of the Department of Thermal Engineering,
Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering. He was born in Jiangsu of China on Nov.29, 1932.
He established the "Three-high principle" of pulverized-coal flame
stabilization, achieved the research successes on combustion characteristics of chines
coals, on particles movement and dispersion in complex turbulent flow by influence of
difficult forces acted on the particle, on static method of particle chaotic trajectory
simulation, on probability numerical simulation of flame radiation heat transfer and on
the resolution method of multi-integrated equations by using Hua-Wang number theory. He
invented two new types of pulverized- coal burner. He obtained The National Invention
Medal (Grade 3 and 2)from Chinese Government in 1984 and 1989 and the Gold Medal for
Inventions-Creations Jointly from The World Intellectual Property Organization and The
Patent Office of China. He has won in 1988 the title of The National Expert Making
Outstanding Contributions. He obtained 16 awards from State and different Ministries,
Commissions, Provinces of China. In the past few years he was successful in the research
field of air pollution control technology. He with co- authors published the books:
"Combustion", "Fluidized Bed Combustion Boiler","Numerical
Computation of Combustion Processes" and "Combustion Theory and
Application" and 62 papers.
Jia-Ming Li, ( previous Englidh name as Chia-Ming Lee ), born in
KunMing, Yun-Nan on Movenmber 16, 1945. Professor of Department of Modern Applied Physics
and Director of the Center of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, Tsinghua University. Fellow,
Chinese Academy of Sciences and The Third World Academy of Sciences. B.Sc. (1968),
National Taiwan University, Taipei, China, Ph.D. (1974), the University of Chicago, U.S.A.
His researches centered around theoretical studies of atomic and molecular physics have
resulted in signigicent contributions to our understanding of the intimate relation
between the structure of excited atoms (molecules) and their relation between the related
dynamical processes, in particular for developing the multi-channel quantum defect theory
(MQDT). MQDT provides a unified theoretical treatment of the atomic and molecular spectral
phenomena such as strongly perturbed Rydberg spectra, autoiomization spectra and their
adjecent continuum spectra associated with the related low-energy electron-ion collision
processes. In recognition of his outstanding research contributions, he was awarded the
Kastler Prize (1986) at the International Center for Theoratical Physics.

Zhaoyuan Chen Professor of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua
University. An expert in structural engineering and protective construction engineering,
Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He was born in Ningbo City, Zhejiang
Province in 1931, and graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering, Tsinghua
University in 1952. He has been working as a teaching and research staff at Tsinghua
University since 1952 . His research experience covers reinforced concrete, protective
structures against blast and impact loads, evaluation of existing building structures,
high-strength concrete and high-performance concrete. He got honorary titles of Expert
with Distinguished Achievements from State Council in 1984, Advanced Worker in Science and
Tecnology from State Commission of Civil Defense in 1987, and won several scientific
research prizes awarded by National Congress of Science and Technology¡¢State
Commission of Education and State Ministry of Construction. His recent research activities
include behavior and design methods of high-strength concrete members subjected to
earthquake loading, soil nailing for deep foundation excavationns in urban areas. He is
also the Executive Director of China¡¡Civil Engineering Society (CCES), the
Vice-President of Protective Construction Institution, the Chairman of CCES Committee on

Qinghua Du Professor of Theoretical and applied
Mechanics, Tsinghua University, Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering. He was born in
1919 in Hangzhou,Zhejing Provice. Graduated from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1940. He
receives his PhD in Engineering Mechanics at Stanford University in 1951. Upon his return
to China, he worked for a short time at Beijing University before moving to Tsinghua
University, where he has been a Professor since 1952. He is also concurrently Professor of
at Shanghai Jiaotong University as well as at Xian Jiaotong University since 1983.
Professor of Mechanics at Zhejiang University since 1985, and honorary professor of
Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics since 1987. Du is well-known for his
contributions to the field of engineering mechanics, especially in the area of light
vehicle structural mechanics and, recently, for research on BEM (Boundary Element Method).
He has over 120 technical publications and has written six books on engineering mechanics.
He has been a Coordinator of a major research area of the Chinese National Natural
Sciences Foundation entitled: The Strength and Vibrations Studies of Modern Machinery
Structures (1983-1985, 1987-90). Du has led the group (60 professors), resulting in 20
doctoral degrees and over 100 MS Degrees connected with this area. In addition, he is the
Chief Editor of the proceedings of nine International Conferences on vibration problems
and BEM. He is Chairman of the Beijing Society of Mechanics. Du has also been a
long-standing editor of Acta Mechanica Sinica, and Editor-in-Chief, of the journal, Acta
Mechanica Solida Sinica(1980-1992). In 1990, Du received a first class Award of Scientific
Research of the China State Education Commission and has been one of the recipients of the
National Special Award of High Level Education Achievements by CSEC in 1993.
Longtu Li professor of Department of Materials Science and Engineering ,
Tsinghua University. Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering. The Director of State Key
Lab. of New Ceramics and Fine Processing. He was born in Nan-an county , Fujian Province,
China, in 1935. Graduated from Tsinghua University in 1958. He is a member of the
evaluation committee of National Nature Since Award, vice-chairman of evaluation committee
of speciality construction of university in Beijing, a senior member of IEEE. His research
field include: ferroelectric, Piezoelectric, dielectric and semiconductive ceramic
materials and their applications. He has been in charge of a key project, ¡°High
performance Low firing MLCC¡±, of the National Advanced Materials Program of China under
the State Science and Technogy Commission for many years. Due to his outstanding
constribution, he was awarded first-class award conferred by the State Science and

Weinheim, Germany. The main research fields are concerning:1. High Velocity Fluidization
from hydrodynamics, heat and mass transfer, reaction kinetics, mathematical modeling to

Wen Shizhu,
Professor of the Department of Precision Instruments and Technology, Academician of the
Chinese Academy of Sciences, an expert in mechanical engineering. He was born in
Fengcheng, Jiangxi Province in 1932. He graduated from the Department of Mechanical
Engineering, Tsinghua University, with the honor of Excellent Graduate Golden Medal in
1955, engaged in advanced studies and worked as a visiting scholar in the Imperial College
of Science and Technology, United Kingdom in 1979. He served successively as the Director
of Machine Design Division, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Tribology, Vice
President and Honorary President of Tribology Institution of Chinese Mechanical Engineer
Society, editor of Journals: "Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering",
"Tribology (in Chinese)", "Tribology International",
"Tribotest", etc.. He presided over the First Asia International Conference on
Tribology. Over a long period of time, he has been engaging in research on

BING-LIN GU Scientist of condensed
matter physics and expert of computational materials science. Born in Harbin, Heilongjiang
Province. Graduated from Tsinghua University in 1970, and acquired the degree of Ph. D. at
Aarhus University of Denmark in 1982. Gu was engaged in the research on physics of
photon-electronic materials at Notre Dame University, United States as a senior visiting
scholar in 1985-1986, and worked on materials design as a guest professor at Tohoku
University, Japan in 1993-1994. Now professor Gu is the head of Department of Physics and
Center of Advanced Studies, Tsinghua University.
Professor Gu has been mainly engaged in the microstructure design of materials,
especially the relations among components, structures, and properties. He built up the
model for designing multi-component semiconductor and developed the probability wave
theory of atomic configuration (PWAC); he successfully predicted the ground states of
complex perovskites, and gave the criterion of order-disorder in relaxor ferroelectrics;
he revealed new characteristics of quantum dots, atomic clusters, and cluster assembling
materials. These results were experimentally confirmed and frequently quoted.
Ni Weidou,
professor of Thermal Engineering Dept. , Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering. He was
born in Shanghai in 1932,native Nibo,Zejing Province. He got the Ms degree at Moscow State
Polytechnical University, and Ph.D at St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University,
later, he was awarded as Honorary Doctor of Science and was elected as Academician of
International Academy of Higher Education. He was the former Vice President of Tsinghua
University, now is the Vice President of Beijing Association of Science and Technology,
the Chinese Co-Chair of Working Group of Energy Strategy and Technology of the China
Council of International Cooperation on Environment and Development. He is the famous
scholar in the field of the modeling, simulation, control and diagnostics of the
turbo-machinery and thermal power systems, has systematically developed the new theory and
method of the modeling and control strategy of complex thermal systems, had creative
achievement in the on-line monitoring and diagnostics of large power plants, had developed
the first training simulator of the gas/steam combined cycles, resolved a lot of key
problems concerning the application of advanced gas turbines in China .He has been awarded
the 2nd state prize and several 1st prizes of Ministries, and
authored and co-authored over 200 journal and national / international conferences papers
, was the author of 5 technical books. He supervised more than 40 Ms., PhD and post
doctors, many of them already had became outstanding scholars and experts in the related
fields.
LIU Baicheng (B. C. Liu): Professor of the Department of
Mechanical Engineering, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Born in 1933 in
Shanghai and graduated in 1955 in Tsinghua University with Gold Medal Award. As a Visiting
Scholar, he did advanced research in University of Wisconsin and Massachusetts Institute
of Technology from 1978 to 1981. He is the member of the Evaluation Committee of the
Chinese National Natural Science Foundation, Honorary Director of the Chinese Foundrymen¡¯s
Society, Vice-president of the Beijing Foundrymen¡¯s Society, Editors of the Journal of
the Chinese Mechanical Engineering and International Journal of Cast Metal Research etc.
He has done great contribution to the development of advanced manufacturing technology
(AMT), to the reform of traditional foundry industry by using computer technology, to the
fundamental study on physical metallurgy of cast alloys, and to the improvement of
production technology of spheroidal graphite cast iron etc. He won nine important awards,
including two First Class Awards of Science and Technology Progress from the State
Ministry of Education, one First Class Award of the Excellent Teaching Achievement from
the Beijing Municipal Government, four Second Class Awards of Science and Technology
Progress from Ministries of Education and Machinery Building, and two Awards from the
United States of America. He holds two patents as well. He visited more than 20 famous
universities abroad and gave seminars, and also presented more than 20 papers in different
international conferences. He published three books and more than 180 papers including 80
in English.
Sun Jiaguang, Professor of Computer Science
Department, Doctoral Supervisor, Director of National CAD Supported Software Engineering
Research Center, Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He was born in ZhenJiang of
Jiangsu province in 1946 and graduated from Atuomation Department of Tsinghua University
in 1970. Professor Sun has engaged in the research and teaching of Computer Graphics,
Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Management Since 1975. He has developed six
software products including Computer Aided Resign and Drawing, 3-Dimension Geometry
Modeling, Integrated CAD/CAM Supporting Software, Engineering Drawing Management,
Enterprise Resource Planning and Product Data Management System. He has also made
innovation in Product Data Management System based on Corba/Web, Geometry Modeling with
wireframe, surface, solid and feather, Environment for multi-resource, multi-event and
multi-process working cooperatively. The project Cooperative Geometry Design which he
co-applied was supported by National Natural Science Fundation of America and National
Natural Science Fundation of France. Professor Sun has won the Science and Technology
Development Awards fifteen times awarded by the Nation and the Ministry. He has published
128 papers among which 26 papers were indexed by EI. Professor Sun also published 4 books
as the first author.
Daozeng Li was born in Shanghai in the
year of 1930. He graduated in 1952 from the Department of Architecture of Tsinghua
University, and since then has been appointed as a faculty member of that Department. At
present, he is a Professor of the School of Architecture; in the past, he has been
appointed as the Head of the Department; the Dean of the School; member of the Topical
Appraisal Group of the 3, 4th session of the Degree Committee of the State
Council; member of the 7, 8th Standing Council of the China Society of
Architecture; Vice Director of the Beijing Committee of the Arts of Architecture.
Professor Daozeng Li is fairly deep in theoretical research and broad on
architecture design practice, especially expertized in theater design, also versed in both
domestic and foreign history of theater development. During the age of 1958 to 1960, he
had taken charge of the design work for the National Grand Theater and the Theater for the
People¡¯s Liberation Army as well. In the Eighties and Nineties, he had
successively undertaken design projects for 5 different theaters. The design scheme for
the Tian Qiau Theater won first place of ¡°1996¡¯s Ten Excellent Design Award for Public
Buildings in Capital Beijing¡±. In 1993 he was invited by the Department of Architecture
of the University of Carnegie Mellon, as a visiting professor to teach a theater design
course there; he won widespread acclaim from his U.S colleagues and students of that
Department. In 1996 he finalized his manuscript for the treatize ¡¶A History of the
Western Theater and Theater Architecture¡·with a content of 1,570,000 words, and 1,046
sheets of illustrations. This treatize was later published in 1999, was deemed as a great
contribution to the theater- architecture reseaches. In 1998 he revealed an article ¡°On
New Eclecticism¡±; wrote and published a new book ¡¶An Introduction to Environment and
Behavior¡·and guided one of his doctorates to complete the dissertation ¡°Research on
Contemporary Chinese Sustainable Architecture¡±;the above mentioned three aspects of
theoretical approaches on the whole constructed mainstays of his design philosophy.
Besides, he had already cultivated 8 Ph.D.s, 12 Masters, one after another to attain their
degrees.
Elected as member of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997
