About the Department

The Department of Physics was founded in 1926, re-established in 1982, and later renamed as the Department of Modern Applied Physics. It has only one program of Modern Applied Physics for undergraduates. There are five graduate programs: Theoretical Physics, Optics, Condensed Matter Physics, Nuclear Physics, and Accelerator Physics and its Application, all offering Doctor's and Master's degrees. There are 32 full professors, 11 supervisors for Ph.D. candidates, and 61 associate professors in the Department. Professor Meng Zhaoying, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is among them.

By focusing on such disciplines as Solid-state Physics, Modern Optics, Nuclear Physics, Beam Physics and Theoretical Physics, the Department is striving to have a unified speciality in Applied Physics. It has a Research Institute of Modern Physics.

There are 8 laboratories, among which the Laboratory of Laser Single Atom Detection is an open laboratory of the State Education Commission. The Laboratory for New Measuring Techniques in Physics and the Laboratory of Modern Physical Electronics are under construction.
