By focusing on such disciplines as Solid-state Physics, Modern Optics, Nuclear Physics, Beam Physics and Theoretical Physics, the Department is striving to have a unified speciality in Applied Physics. It has a Research Institute of Modern Physics.
There are 8 laboratories, among which the Laboratory of Laser Single Atom Detection is an open laboratory of the State Education Commission. The Laboratory for New Measuring Techniques in Physics and the Laboratory of Modern Physical Electronics are under construction.
