School of Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is one of the disciplines with long history in Tsinghua University. The Department of Mechanical Engineering was founded in 1932, which was developed and separated into several departments later. The School of Mechanical Engineering was established on January 30, 1996 and was formed from the Department of Precision Instruments and Mechanology, the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Automotive Engineering. There are 70 professors (including Professor Guofan Jin, who is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Dean of the School, Professor Jiluan Pan, who is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) and 158 associate professors in the School. The school currently has 1808 undergraduate students, 341 graduate students for Master degree and 206 graduate students for Doctor degree.

Teaching System

The School of Mechanical Engineering offers 4 undergraduate programs, 15 Master programs and 8 programs for Doctor degree. The academic training for Bachelor degree includes a 5 years curriculum with 3 years mainly for basic science courses and part of courses on technical basis and 2 years for courses on engineering basis, specialized courses and a diploma project. The school has a 2 to 3 years Master degree curriculum, stressing on course study in the first year and thesis work for the remainder of the time. A Doctor degree can be obtained after the Master degree with some courses and 2 to 3 years thesis work.

On the basis of the above system, a new intensive curriculum is approved to be put into practice in the School. After 3 to 4 years undergraduate study, a selective group of students with excellent academic records can directly be enrolled into the Master degree programs through a qualification process. If they fulfill the course study and thesis work successfully, they will obtain both Bachelor and Master degrees in a total of 6 years.

Research Activities & Setup

Advanced Manufacturing Technology is the focus of research in the School. In recent years, the departments have undertaken several "863 High-tech" projects, major national projects, a large number of projects from the National Natural Science Foundation and some international collaborative projects. The departments of the School have won Nation level awards on 30 projects and Ministry and State Commission level awards on 202 projects for the outstanding achievements in scientific research. At present, the emphasized new areas of research in the School are advanced manufacturing technology, micro/nanotechnology, optics and opto-electric technique, laser processing and rapid prototyping technology, numerical simulation and optimization of hot-working processing, automobile safety and energy saving, electric vehicle and so on. The School has 6 institutes and 5 State Key Laboratories and National Engineering Centers.
