School of Sciences


The science disciplines in Tsinghua University were established relatively early. Before 1949 there were the Departments of Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Geology and Meteorology; the School of Sciences was also founded .

In the nationwide reorganization of higher education in 1952, Tsinghua University was able to keep part of the science teaching staff and experimental equipment. A series of new science specialties were organized in later years.In recent years Departments of Applied Mathematics, Modern Applied Physics,Chemistry, Biological Science and Biotechnology, as well as the institutes of Applied Mathematics and Modern Physics were organized to meet the needs of national development and the progress of science. In 1985 the School of Sciences was officially re-established. Professor Zhou Guangzhao, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was invited to be the dean of the School.
