General information

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, founded in 1932, is one of the earliest established disciplines in Tsinghua University. It has now developed into the School of Mechanical Engineering, being consist of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Precision Instruments & Mechanology and the Department of Automotive Engineering, which were separated from the former Department of Mechanical Engineering. There are 129 staff members worked in the department, including 26 full professors and 36 associate professors.

Teaching Programs

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers a general program for all the undergraduate students, majored in mechanical engineering and automation. There are about 120 students enrolled into the department annually. This program spends the students 5 years for their Bachelor's degree.
The department offers also 5 master's programs for postgraduates, namely the Welding Program, the Metal Forming Program, the Foundry Program, the Metallic Materials & Heat Treatment Program and the Non-Destructive Testing Program. This program is a 2 to 3 year curriculum, stressing on courses study in the first year and thesis work in the rest of time.
There are 4 doctoral degree programs offered in the department, namely the Welding Program, the Metal Forming Program, the Foundry Program, the Metallic Materials & Heat Treatment Program. A doctorate candidate usually needs to spend a 3 to 4 year curriculum beyond the Master's degree, including a career of assistant professor for one year.

Research Activities

Intelligent control technology of manufacturing system and processes, and new techniques for advanced materials processing and forming are the two main research fields in the department. In recent years, quite a few important projects have been accomplished in the department, as the National 863 High-Tech Projects, the National Major Projects, the projects funded by the National Natural Sciences Foundation and key projects of government ministries and provincial governments. The department has won 11 items of national award and 88 items of ministry or province award for outstanding achievements in scientific research.
