On the afternoon of June 14, Tsinghua held a ceremony for inviting Prof. Chen Ning Yang to be an honorary professor of Tsinghua University. President Wang Dazhong conferred the letter of appointment to Prof. Chen Ning Yang. Prof. Yang graduated from Southwest Associated University in 1942, and then went to study in US. He won Nobel Prize of physics in 1957. Prof. Yang has been awarded many famous prizes and honorary titles. He is a member of US Academy of Sciences and was elected as a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1994. Prof. Yang has spent large efforts to help to establish the Center of Advance Study at Tsinghua. At the ceremony, Prof. Chen Ning Yang gave an emotional speech to show his willingness to assist Tsinghua to develop a top level Science School. More than 200 students and teachers attended the ceremony and listened to his lecture "Bose-Einstein Condensation of Dilute Hard-ball Gas".

Tsinghua held a ceremony for the 102nd birthday of Mr. Yang Wuzhi Mr. Yang Wuzhi was a famous mathematician, a great educationist and a founder of Mathematics Department of Tsinghua Univ. Mr. Yang Wuzhi was born in 1896. He went to the United States in 1923 and studied at Stanford Univ. and Univ. of Chicago. He was the first Chinese scholar with a Ph.D in math. He was invited to teach at Tsinghua in 1929 and he trained a large number of famous scientists. President Wang Dazhong highly appreciated Mr. Yang Wuzhi contributions to Tsinghua. President Wang emphasized that mathematics is a very important discipline for a top-quality Science School and a world-class university. 19 members of CAS, many celebrities, the eldest son, prof. C.N. Yang, of Mr. Yang Wuzhi, and other Yang's family members and relatives attended the ceremony.

The signing ceremony was held on June 11. President Wang Dazhong and the leaders of Taiyuan City attended the ceremony. On June 9-11, the senior officials of Taiyuan City and executives of Taiyuan enterprises visited CERNET and other 11 labs of Tsinghua. Both sides signed agreements and memorandums on 21 projects.

Chinese Academic Journal (CD version) Press was established at Tsinghua

On June 12, Tsinghua hosted a dedication ceremony for "Chinese Academic Journal (CD version) Press". Leaders of several ministries and more than 200 guests attended the meeting. The vice president of Tsinghua, Prof. Liang Youneng, presided over the meeting and president Wang Dazhong gave a speech. The guests watched the demonstration of the electronic version.

Recently, students from Department of Automation and Department of Computer Science and Technology of Tsinghua participated the "Mathematical Modeling Competition for University Students of U.S.A., Tsinghua teams won the special prize and three first class prizes in the contest.

Brief News

* On June 7, "The Eighth China Study Summer Course" started at Tsinghua. The course is jointly sponsored by Tsinghua and Hong Kong Baptist University.

* On June 12, "Tsinghua--Yunnan Senior Official Training Course" successfully concluded with a closing ceremony.

*The Architecture Design Institute of Tsinghua was awarded three prizes in '98 Higher Education Construction Projects Competition. This activity was led by the Ministry of Education.
